Pros: $600, m anual with working overdrive, straight body, working power locks, running really well, shifts well, no clunking or squeaking or or rattles. Swedish import, supposedly. The space on the front bumper for a euro plate seems to back that up.

Cons: Non-turbo. He thinks it’s a turbo, but it’s not. Unknown kms, but over 400k. Totally blown shocks.   Clearcoat has run away, random surface rust, the usual bubbling at the spare tire wells under the rear quarters, leaky exhaust (just needs clamps tightened...supposedly), sometimes noisy blower motor, and the dealbreaker.....it’s been smoked in.

So I bailed, mostly because of the smoke smell. And my bank account breathed a sigh of relief for not getting a 4th car.

Smoky on the outside. Smoky on the inside. Probably smouldering money...

And yet...stripped, caged and LS swapped. Voila...money burns cleanly!!

I don’t know...I was trying to figure that out. If it was an American grey market import early in the cars life, before coming to Canada,  they would’ve switched to those headlights, but then the speedo would’ve been changed to miles....so yeah. I’m confused

AFAIK the 740 turbodiesels were actually more reliable than the 240 non-turbos, because Volkswagen underbuilt the NA variant, and fixed it when they made the mods to turbo it.

Also, another hint for it not being an import, those look like 5 mph bumpers, and I’m finding photos showing US cars having room for a Euro plate.

Ah, that’s also a very good point. Well, considering he said it’s a turbo and it’s not, I’m not surprised it’s not a euro import.

I have no idea, but you should come to Vancouver, that’s probably the most common taxi here. Or second most common behind the regular Prius.

Just needs rusty clamps tightened except they are rusted on and will break when you try to turn them—anybody think I am wrong?

But I like it, the smoker thing not so much, that should be coming out the tailpipe, not lingering in the cabin.

If it didn’t smell like cigs inside, I probably would’ve. Things don’t rust that bad here, so this is on the rusty side for a 240 here, the main draw was turbo diesel + manual, so no turbo was a letdown, and then smoked in was the deal breaker.

Yeah I would’ve just taken it to a good muffler shop I now to have it all welded instead of clamped. It really is too bad about the smokey interior, I would’ve bought it otherwise.

I had one-a wagon . Very briefly. (Got it home-a buddy needed a car-offered me more than I paid for it.) It was non-turbo. 5 cylinder VW. Rumor has it (internet folks repeating either truth or nonsense? ) says there were oiling issues with the cam-something about not upping the oiling system when adding the extra c ylinder. Wish I still had it.

It would be, it made more power than I expected. Not much, but got up to highway speed without drama and cruises happily in overdrive.

There might be something that could actually deal with the smell, but after watching a buddy try like 10 different things to get the smell out of his truck, I don’t wanna risk it

Weird, s hould’ve been a 6 cylinder if it was the factory engine. I think I read something similar, or at least about the earlier and non-turbo engines being weaker than the later and turbo ones.

I looked it up-I think you are correct. It probably was a 6.

Kill me now, I’m getting a soft spot for Prii, especially the Vs. I’m a sophomore in highschool and this is the year people start getting their first cars, and the first of my friend group is a big white dude who you’d expect to pull up with a big red Sil verado with a few pumps and ARs in the back, but instead he was given a silver 2012 Prius V. I've been places with him and the gang in it and because of that I kinda like it. 2 friends of mine are getting their licenses and cars soon though (both are getting 2016/17 Tacomas lucky bastards) so hopefully that cancels it out lmao

Damn, nice price.

I’d have bought it, and paid a couple hundred for a professional interior detailing to remove the tar from all the surfaces. There might be a slightly lingering smell but it will fade over a few months after a detailing.

I considered that, but with that cost, and the cost of making the exhaust not leak, I’d already be at or above what I could ever sell it for. If I was going to drive it for any length of time I’d have to do the shocks too, and then I’m definitely more into it than it’s worth, and I really shouldn’t get something I couldn’t at least break even on.
